Opaque porcelain, also known as fine earthenware or demi-porcelain, originated in England in 1769 and appeared in France at the end of the 18th century, notably in the Pont aux Choux factory. It is a white opaque fine-textured dense paste covered with a simple transparent glaze.
It was popular amongst wealthier clients.
Thicker coarser earthenware was aimed at more modest households.

Some pieces have stains and the colours can be faded.
