Beautiful large vintage bentwood coat rack identical to the Thonet 1890S model No 4, but without a signature hence my wording and price 😉.
This freestanding piece of furniture has an arch frame with curved coat hooks on either side and a small drawer in the centre.
This is a larger and rarer version of the ‘parrot’ model that we still find in traditional bistros.
Michael Thonet was a German-Austrian cabinetmaker and industrialist born in 1796.
He used a process to bend wood and was one of the first to rationalise production for industrial use.
His No. 14 chair became a bestseller and an icon of industrial furniture design. More than 50 million copies have been sold and it is still the benchmark bistro chair today.
