Au XIe siècle, une forteresse en bois fut construite par Robert de Mesnières, seigneur du lieu, pour contrôler le passage d’une ancienne voie romaine et de la vallée de la Béthune.
After centuries of successions, the fortress was dismantled by the English in the 15th century during the Hundred Years War.
Le château de Mesnière en bray sera alors reconstruit au XVIe siècle sur les ruines de la forteresse sous l’impulsion de Charles Boissay, inspiré par l’architecture de la Renaissance des châteaux de la Loire. La forteresse sera considérée comme le centre du village durant des siècles fournissant ainsi du pain et de l’électricité et sera l’un des plus grands monuments historiques classés en 1862.
The fortress was considered the centre of the village for centuries, providing bread and electricity, and was one of the largest listed historic monuments in 1862. This painting features vibrant colours and the fine brushstrokes.
