Antique French Framed Polychrome Lithograph : Salvatore Mundi

35,00

Beautiful vintage polychrome engraving / lithograph representing infant Jesus facing us, holding in his left hand a cruciferous orb (a globe surmounted by a cross) and making a blessing gesture with his right hand.

As a Christian symbol, its circular shape is reminiscent not of the globe but of the vault of the Universe and thus symbolizes the temporal - and not only spiritual - domination of Christ over the world.

In Western iconography, from the 15th century onwards, Christ carrying the orb in his hand was given the name Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World) - the title of this portrait. For a king, the orb is thus a reminder that he is the representative of Christ on earth.

The work is presented under glass in a carved wooden frame
